News of the Times Episode 432 | 1830
In today’s episode we start in 1822.
England has been suffering from an increasingly terrible crime wave. The police, such as it is, consists of hired watchmen who are often n the pay of the very gangs they are supposed to be protecting.
Robert Peel is brought in as home secretary. Peel has a vision of a separate independent police force, complete with constabulary, whose purpose will be to support and protect the public. Despite great resistance and sceptics from the public of the new police force, or “peelers”, the constabulary is launched.
From this brave new experiment, the new constabulary suffers its first death in the line of duty in 1830. This is his story.
For those who wish to dip their toes into the world of the peculiar, our further particulars story at the end of this episode, we take a look at a story from Wales involving a very active poltergeist!
