In today’s episode it is January 1888 Marylebone, in an upper middle class neighbourhood that although less than 5 miles away from Whitechapel could very well be a hundred miles in way n terms of the differences with Whitechapel financially and socially.
Miss Lucy Clarke, a very successful dress maker with prestigious clients is found murdered in the building of her apartments. Her multiple rings have bene taken off and her jewellery in her rooms, along with some cash, taken.
The wonder is how did the robber / murderer get in?
Whilst investigating the murdered woman’s rooms, a letter is discovered that had been written, but not sent, to one of her nephews. The letter accuses the young nephew of having stolen her property and warning of dire consequences. He visits her to apologise. He is believed to have been the last person to see her alive.
We take a look at this early 1888 case – the background, the crime and the verdict.
For those who enjoy the slightly offbeat, in our further particulars segment at the end of this episode, we have a story of the murder of the man who had sold the sack that was used by Dr Crippen’s to hold his wife’s body some few years before….
